Letter: An idea for protecting students

When considering overall mental health, one must consider the importance of protecting our children while they are in school. At any time, a student or ex-student, who may be suffering with mental health issues, could decide to “borrow” a gun and sneak it into school for revenge against a teacher or a bully.

I would draft legislation to create a State Police School Protection Force. These police officers would be placed at every school in the entire state. My legislation would require that only highly trained police officers would be hired. With their knowledge and experience, they would be able to spot a student who is displaying potential mental health issues and intervene.

I am a gun enthusiast, and I enjoy target shooting at a safe shooting range. I will also say that a gun is never the cause of a (problem), but does not belong in schools.

The bottom line is that our children must be protected while they are in school so that they can learn in a safe environment. We as a society cannot afford or allow another Columbine incident to happen again.
